Considered by most to be the world's premier watchmakers, Patek Philippe watches have been gracing the wrists and pockets of the elite since 1851. Like all, top-notch watchmakers, Patek Philippe's home base is Geneva Switzerland. Queen Victoria took a liking to Patek Philippe watches, so much so that she created a trend towards them in 19th Century Britannia. Congratulations to Big Brown on his win of the 134th Kentucky Derby. We at The Luxury Lifestyle would like to wish the best of luck to him in his pursuit of the Triple Crown. If he did achieve the Triple Crown, he would be the first horse to do so since 1978.

Our Condolences go out to the friends, trainers, jockey, and owner of Eight Belles who came in second, but had to be euthanized due to the breaking of two front ankles after the race.

Have a Guinness in honor of Dennis of Cork, who came in 3rd!

The next leg of the Triple Crown is on May 19th - The Preakness Stakes in Maryland.

Mercedes-Benz GLK Freeside, Specs, Pictures, Video and Review!

Unveiled to the American Motoring Public at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz GLK is the marquee's latest entrant in the SUV market. It is based on a C-Class Chassis and is a competitor to BMW's X3. It is an interesting model, available with 4Matic, all-wheel-drive and at least three engine choices. In the U.S. 2.8 liter V6 and a 3.5 liter V6 are likely to be available - thus, the GLK 280 and the GLK 350. In Europe a diesel variant can be assured. As one can see from pictures of the GLK it cetainly takes it's styling clues from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the Geländewagen. Models should hit dealers by the First Quarter of 2009 (Q1 '09).

The new Maybach Landaulet resurrects the legend of the classic luxury landaulets, a feature of which is that only the chauffeur’s area is closed. An extra-large folding roof opens up over the pampered rear-seat passengers when required, leaving no obstructions between them and the blue sky above. The Maybach Landaulet thus offers a majestic open-air experience currently unrivalled by any other automobile. Boasting a certain romantic quality and allowing its passengers the opportunity to savour a closeness to nature, this exceptional vehicle also features the ultimate in comfort and technological sophistication and as such sets the new standard for the world’s most exclusive luxury vehicles.

In November 2007, Maybach revived the aura of the grand carriages of days gone by with its Landaulet study. The response from the public to this masterpiece was overwhelming, so much so that Maybach decided to offer the hand-built Landaulet based exclusively on the customer’s own specifications. Exclusive workplace for the chauffeur, exquisite luxury for passengers

The Maybach Landaulet is a masterpiece of automotive engineering and comes with its very own exciting yet distinguished, authentic style. While the chauffeur’s workplace is appointed with high-grade, smooth black leather and trim elements in glossy piano lacquer, the passengers in the rear with its optional contrasting colour scheme enjoy their place in the sun. They travel on opulent reclining seats upholstered in exquisite Grand Nappa leather in an environment of utmost luxury and exquisite style.

Large folding roof for a close-to experience of nature

In technical terms the Maybach Landaulet is based on the Maybach 62 S – which can claim to be the world’s most powerful series-produced chauffeured saloon. Maybach technicians have removed the rear roof module in order to afford passengers an unobstructed view of the sky above. The side walls have been invisibly reinforced with an integral tubular steel structure. As these measures have not altered the silhouette of the luxury saloon, the generously dimensioned doors and the complete interior with reclining seats remain unchanged.

When closed, the black soft-top of the Landaulet rests on the roof frame formed by the longitudinal roof arches and is wind- and weather-proof. When requested by the passengers, the chauffeur operates a switch in the centre console. Fully automatically, the electro-hydraulic system then opens the roof, thetop is folded and gently laid onto the parcel shelf in the rear, together with its integral rear windscreen made of safety glass.

The chauffeur is able to enclose the folded roof with a fine leather tonneau cover, which both conceals the roof mechanism from view and completes the overall picture of outstanding elegance. The tonneau cover comes in the same colour as the interior of the rear compartment, thereby ensuring consistent styling and creating a harmonious link with the exterior. A logo reading “Maybach Landaulet” in the colour specified by the customer is embroidered onto the cover, where it is visible to following traffic.

Designed specifically for open-top motoring

Maybach has adapted the luxurious rear compartment to the requirements of open-top motoring. For instance, the rear head restraints are slightly larger than on the saloon and effectively help reduce wind turbulence. Another slim wind deflector is automatically raised at speeds above 70 km/h to further reduce the risk of any uncomfortable draughts. The deflector, which measures around five centimetres, can be activated manually at any time. The switch is conveniently positioned for rear passengers in the centre console.

The intercom in the passenger compartment is fitted with an additional handset in the centre console, allowing passengers to communicate with the driver at any time while the roof is down.

Appointments to satisfy every desire

The new Maybach Landaulet is painted in Baltic Black or Nevada Silver in a sophisticated process that ensures the highest standards of quality. Clients can choose from three leather appointment options, and a choice of two trim element finishes – black piano lacquer combined with either carbon-fibre trim or fine anthracite poplar.

As testimony to its exceptional customer focus, Maybach also meets many customer special requirements at no extra charge. For instance, Landaulet clients can choose the individual appointments for their vehicle from the entire Maybach paint finish, leather and trim element range. An extra charge only applies to highly exclusive requirements such as special paint finishes based on the customer’s own specifications, select leather colours, trim elements in natural stone or the electro-transparent partition.

Visual highlights are provided by 20-inch aluminium wheels, also available as an option painted in the vehicle colour or burnished to a high sheen in a special finishing process.

Engine and suspension

The Maybach Landaulet is powered by an uprated V12 engine, developed for the Maybach 57 S and the Maybach 62 S. Thanks to twin turbochargers, the V12 engine develops 450 kW/612 hp from a displacement of 5980 cubic centimetres. Equipped with the AIRMATIC DC (Dual Control) electronically controlled air suspension system and the Adaptive Damping System (ADS II) the Landaulet model achieves an outstanding level of ride comfort whilst at the same time proving that even a prestigious automobile can display excellent agility and handling qualities.

First deliveries in autumn 2008

The Maybach Landaulet will cost EUR 900,000 (or US$ 1.35 million). The first customer vehicles are due to leave Maybach Manufaktur in autumn 2008.

Maybach's smaller models, the 57 and 57 are considered by most to be driver's cars. Everything you would ever want, and more is offered as option on these cars. Certainly not as well known as Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Maybach has been carving out an identity of it's own since 2003. In 2003, the brand was revived by Mercedes-Benz. Currently five models are produced, Maybach 57, Maybach 62, Maybach 57s, Maybach 62s, and the Maybach Landaulet. Production numbers are limited, while levels of customization are infinite. Autos are either ordered in person in Sindilfingen or through a video-conference at your local Maybach Dealer with Sindelfingen. In celebration of the world's favorite special agent, who has been wearing Omega Seamasters since the early 90's, Omega has released a Special James Bond Limited Edition Omega Seamaster. It is an updated version of Seamaster "Bond" that has been immensely popular in recent years. It features a helium release valve, rotatable bezel, one of the most comfortable bracelets on the market, and a special limited edition caseback. Also, on the watch is Omega's new Co-Axial Movement, which features better shock-resistantance, a longer power reserve, and longer service intervals. 10,007 of these limited editions will be produced.

BaselWorld 2008: Omega Speedmaster Legend - Michael Shumacher

BaselWorld 2008 Update: Rolex Day-Date II

Also updated at BaselWorld 2008, was Rolex's Day-Date or Presidential. It's design has not been altered significantly since the 50's. But now, in response to the surge in popularity of larger watches, it too is available in a larger size. The Day-Date II boasts a 5mm increase over the Day-Date, from 36mm to 41mm. The new larger Day-Date II caters to a new generation of younger, Rolex wearers. It is available in yellow gold, white gold, rose gold and platinum. Even, in this larger size, it still retains it's place amongst the finest of dress watches.

"The Day-Date II stands out. In 18 ct yellow, white or Everose gold, and also in

MOVEMENT
The Day-Date II is equipped with the new calibre 3156, designed and manufactured

Certified as a chronometer by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute

For optimal comfort, the Day-Date II is equipped with a new Super-President

Basel World 2008 Update: Rolex Deep-Sea

In perhaps the most exciting introduction of Basel World 2008, The Rolex Deep-Sea made it's way on to the scene.

beginning of time. They kindle in man an irrepressible desire for adventure, challenge and ever greater achievement, a drive throughout the ages to seek new heights and explore the deep.

The new Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA is a product of man’s inherent
desire to push the boundaries of his dreams and his potential. Waterproof to an extreme depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet), this new-generation
diver’s watch confirms the supremacy of Rolex in the mastery of waterproofness and
demonstrates an ever-present pursuit of excellence. Entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex, the Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA is a totally new watch that benefits from important technical innovations. It is equipped with a RINGLOCK SYSTEM, a new case architecture patented by Rolex, which allows the watch to resist the colossal pressure exerted by water at great depths. It is the first watch to feature a bracelet with a double extension system making it easily adapt-able for greater comfort in wear over a diving suit. TECHNICAL FEATURES

CASE ARCHITECTURE AND WATERPROOFNESS
A watch developed for extreme depths, guaranteed waterproof to 3,900 metres (12,800
feet), the Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA required the design of a case with a unique architecture, the RINGLOCK SYSTEM. This innovation patented by Rolex consists of a
combination of three distinctive features:

• The high-performance ring
Set inside the middle case of the watch between the crystal and the case back, the
high-performance nitrogen-alloyed stainless steel ring withstands the pressure exerted
by water on the crystal and the case back.
The middle case is made from 904L steel.
• The sapphire crystal
To resist pressure, the synthetic sapphire crystal is slightly domed and substantially
thicker than the crystals of other Oyster models.
• The case back
The case back is made of a titanium alloy, an extremely resistant stainless material. It
is held in place against the high-performance ring by means of a 904L-steel ring.
The helium valve is made of high-performance stainless steel. Its size is adapted to the
dimensions of the case to achieve optimal waterproofness. The helium valve is a safety
feature which, during the decompression phase, releases the gases that infiltrate into the
watch during caisson dives.
Indeed, between dives at great depths, professional divers use pressurised caissons in
which they breathe high-pressure gas mixtures, notably containing helium, a very volatile
gas that penetrates into the watch. As the diver resurfaces, the helium valve prevents
damage to the watch.
The Triplock winding crown, equipped with three seals and screwed onto the case,
completes this ingenious waterproof system.

DISPLAY AND LEGIBILITY
The bezel
The Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA is equipped with a unidirectional rotatable bezel with a
60-minute graduated black CERACHROM disc that allows the diver to precisely track his
dive time.
Engraved in the CERACHROM, the numerals and the graduations are filled with platinum
through the use of a PVD technique patented by Rolex.
The zero marker of the graduated bezel, represented by a triangle, is visible longer at
night or in the depths of the ocean thanks to a capsule containing a new luminescent
material that emits a blue glow.
The dial
To enhance legibility, the gold indexes and hands are wider and partially coated with the
same new luminescent material and also emit a blue colour.
The movement
The Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA is equipped with calibre 3135, known for its chronometric
precision, its reliability and its robustness; it also features a PARACHROM hairspring with
high resistance to shocks and magnetic fields.
Certified as a chronometer by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC),
the movement has a 48-hour power reserve.
The bracelet
Manufactured from solid 904L steel, the Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA bracelet can be adjusted
for wear over a diving suit up to 7 mm thick thanks to a double extension system:
• Fliplock extension links,
• the new GLIDELOCK clasp, allowing fine adjustments.
A series of rigorous tests
Because deep-sea diving requires absolute reliability and safety, each Sea-Dweller
DEEPSEA must pass Rolex’s rigorous waterproofness tests. To this end, special
equipment has been developed with the help of COMEX (Compagnie Maritime
d’Expertise), a world-renowned French company specialising in underwater engineering
and hyperbaric technologies.

FUNCTIONING

THE UNIDIRECTIONAL ROTATABLE BEZEL
The Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA allows a diver to safely track his dive time
thanks to the unidirectional graduated bezel featured on the watch.
At the beginning of a dive :
Once in the water, before beginning his descent, the diver turns the bezel to align the
triangle on the graduated bezel to the minute hand, thus indicating the start time of his
dive.
During the dive :
The dive time can be read against the graduated bezel.
Since the DEEPSEA bezel turns only counterclockwise, any accidental rotation can only
have the effect of shortening the dive time.

THE GLIDELOCK CLASP

The new GLIDELOCK clasp allows for fine adjustments to the bracelet length, up to
18 mm by increments of 1.8 mm, without removing the watch.
1 Pull up the clasp’s safety catch.
2 Pull up the center panel of the clasp cover. The teeth located underneath it become
visible.
3 Pull gently on the 12-o’clock side of the bracelet to lengthen it, or slide it into the clasp
to shorten it. Adjustments can be made in 1.8 mm increments, up to a total of 18 mm.
4 Once the bracelet has been adjusted to the desired length, close the center panel.
5 Close the safety catch."

It seems, that the Deep-Sea will replace the current Rolex Seadweller.

BaselWorld 2008 Update : Updated Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner, is a pillar of the horological world. It is considered, by most to be the preeminent diver's watch. This year at Basel World 2008, the venerable Submariner was updated. This update includes, a new ceramic bezel (like the GMT-Master II), on some models, a new blue face, and the new GLIDELOCK Clasp - allowing ratcheting micro-precise adjustments, perfect for slipping it on over your dive suit.

The updated Submariner has been introduced in yellow and white gold for 2008. Presumably, 2009 will herald the release of the updated two-tone Submariner, and 2010 for the introduction of the stainless-steel Sub.

On the yellow-gold models, a black face, and blue face are available. On the white-gold models only a blue face is available.

Sporting Clays: Guide to Purchasing your Firearm

In today's world, there is an abundance of nut-jobs; which is why it is necessary for anyone who like to purchase a firearm, to first obtain a firearms purchase permit. Doing this is a simple process. To do so, go to your local police department and inform them that you would like to obtain a Federal Firearms Purchase Permit. They will then give you some forms (varying from state to state). Questions on these forms range from asking if you are an alcoholic to a release to allow your (if any) mental health records to be researched. You will need to be fingerprinted. This process will should not cost you more than $100.00. Although, this may seem like an unnecessary and silly step, in this post 9/11 world, we cannot take any chances. Once you have this permit, you are free and clear to purchase your new Sporting Clays gun!

BASEL WORLD 2008 UPDATE!

With today, being the first day of Basel World 2008, we at the The Luxury Lifestyle thought it prudent to take a brief departure from Sporting Clays to keep you abreast of recent horological news.

The major announcement of Basel World 2008 thus far has been the Rolex Deep Sea, an improvement over Rolex's Sea Dweller 4000, the Deep Sea features a depth rating of 12,800 feet. It also has a new ceramic bezel and is larger coming in at 43mm

Rolex, also announced a larger 41mm version of the venerable Day-Date, also know as the "Presidential". Also announced was a 40mm Oyster Perpetual. The Cosomograph Daytona line now has the addition of a red gold model.

Overnight, Rolex's website was updated to include these models. When pricing is determined, TLL will bring it you first.

Classic Luxury: The Ferrari Testarossa

You remember the days, when money came in almost as fast as three-piece suits left the racks. You remember the days, before it was scandalous to use paper bags, excess was in. Bigger was better. It was not good enough just to keep up with the Jones', you had to beat them exponentially. They were the days before all this minimalist, eco-friendly nonsense. Greed and excess were and still are good. We must not forget that, it is crucial to our way of life and our Luxury Lifestyle.

Testa Rossa, Italian for Red-Head, and no not the one from Charlie Brown.

With body-work by Pininfarina, the Testarossa is sure to turn heads. By the end of production horsepower had reached a high point of 440hp. It is a true GT - no not a Ford, but a Gran Turrissimo - a Grand Tourer.

Production of the final Testarossa variant ended in 1996, but that does not mean that one of these prancing horses can't find it's way into your stable. There are plenty of Testarossa's available on the used market with less than 10,000 miles for less than $100,000.00.

While it is not the latest and greatest from the Italians, the Testarossa is a classic. It is instantly recognizable and most respectable. But, I didn't need to tell you this it goes with out saying it is a Ferrari after all.

The World's Richest Horse Race

What could be more a part of The Luxury Lifestyle than horse racing? Well, the World Richest Horse Race! The Dubai World Cup with a purse of Six Million dollars ($6,000,000.00), easily qualifies as the world's richest race. Today, the four year-old sensation Curlin won the race by seven and three-quarter (7 3/4) lengths. His jockey Robby Albarado led him to this victory. Curlin was also the victor in the 2007 Breeder's Cup.

In this current age of economic turbulence and distress, your discretionary spending probably isn't as care free as it used to be (Especially, if you were counting on a bonus from Bear Sterns). However, this does not and should not mean that your Luxury Lifestyle should be hampered or come to a screeching halt. Which is why the crew here at The Luxury Life is here to present you with some options.

Whilst in and of itself eBay is not at all luxurious, a good deal of the items that can be acquired on the site are - or rather their prices are most attractive!

Many new and unused luxury items are readily available on eBay. Brands available include: Coach Leather Goods, Barbour Coats, Lacoste Clothing, Vineyard Vines Clothing, Brooks Brothers & almost every other brand out there!

Who knows, you might actually enjoy the hunt on the bay! You are probably already up in the middle of the night, getting nervous over the Asian Markets, so why not throw a bid on purse for the Missus or a handsome pair of slacks for yourself!

NWT - New, With Tags - an abbreviation to look for, it means the item is Brand New with the tags.

Pre-Owned - This is something to avoid, as since were not talking about cars, Pre-Owned clothes can be particularly nasty!

Feedback - eBay's system of rating for sellers and buyers. Look for a seller that has feedback at least of 95% Positive. The more feedback a seller has, the more comfortable you should be with a sale.

Shipping & Handling - Be sure to be aware of Shipping & Handling charges on an item before bidding. Many sellers try to make a quick buck with egregious shipping charges. Always take a look at the other items being sold by a particular seller, they may also have something you want - this way you can save on shipping!

PayPal - For payment on eBay, PayPal is the name of the game. Get yourself a PayPal account and set it up so you can use your favorite credit card with it!

eBay Stores - Many Sellers operate eBay Stores in which they sell a variety of merchandise, some sellers even specialize in a certain brand or style of clothing.

Luxury Coupe Shootout: Audi R8

You might very well be surprised at the inclusion of an Auto Union car in a Luxury-Coupe Shootout, however Audi has boldly set forth an extremely worthy entrant into the category, the R8. The R8 is clearly a super-car. It is boldly styled and engeienered with one purpose in mind: SPEED.

For the Super Bowl, Audi advertised the R8 in the commercial below:

Audi is clearly taking an anti-establishment tact, with the marketing for the R8. However, it will be interesting to see whether or not Audi becomes part of the sports car establishment - a far cry from being a Volkswagen with an appearance package.

The R8 starts at $108,000.00 for a manual transmission or $116,000.00 for one with an automatic transmission.

Luxury Coupe Shootout: Jaguar XK

Jaguar had the Luxury-Coupe market cornered for many years with their venerable E-Type. However, they became too comfortable with the design of the E-Type, and fell behind the times. Today, Jaguar's XK is the marquee's first respectable entrant into the category since the E-Type. The new XK, takes some of it's design from the E-Type (Notably the large, rectangular rear window), but also represents the new direction Jaguar is going with their styling.

The new Jaguar XK comes standard with a naturally aspirated 4.2 liter V8 that produces 300 horsepower. Jaguar produces a high-performance "R" version of the XK. The XKR, includes the addition of a supercharger, which boosts output to 420 horsepower. 14 exterior colors are available, and 9 interior combinations are available. The Jaguar XK starts at approximately $75,000.00.

Luxury Coupe Shootout: Mercedes-Benz CL-Class

All 7 Generations of the full-size Mercedes-Benz Coupe

From the company that brought you the automobile, comes an extremely worthy entrant into the Luxury-Coupe category, the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class. Mercedes-Benz has been producing Luxury-Coupes, as we know them, since 1952, something that is clear upon inspection. Over the past 56 years Mercedes-Benz has perfected what a Luxury-Coupe should be. Their designs have changed with the times, but they all nevertheless exhibit the same quality, style, comfort, and refinement, that is not only synonymous with Mercedes-Benz, but also with the Luxury-Coupe genre.

The full-size coupe from the boys in Stuttgart, has been referred to as the CL-Class since 1993. The current generation was introduced for the 2007 model year. It takes it styling cues from the current generation S-Class. Two un-tuned models are produced. The CL550 which contains a 5.5 liter V8 produces 382hp and the CL600, which uses a 5.5 liter V12 Bi-Turbo that pumps out 510hp. Mercedes-Benz's in-house tuner, AMG produces two variants of the CL. For the CL63 the tuner from Affalterbach unleashed a 6.3 liter V8 that produces 518hp. The cream of the crop however, is the CL65. Under the hood of the beast that is the CL65, lies a 6.0 liter V12 bi-turbo engine, that at the depression of a pedal, lets 604 screaming horses run wild.

The plethora of engine choices ensures that your CL can be a sedate boulevardier, that still has some get-up and go, or an Autobahn devouring machine. Which ever you choose, it will still contain the many features that make the CL exceedingly high-tech. On a drive you may choose, to have your seats heated or cooled, and even have a virtual masseuse in your seat. On a long distance drive, what Mercedes-Benz calls Distronic Plus comes in handy. Distronic Plus is a system, that allows the driver to set the desired following distance behind a car and the Distronic Plus system will maintain that distance on the highway and around town - even as speeds change. All the while, eliminating the need for the driver to keep his foot on the gas pedal. This feat of adaptive cruise control is accomplished through radar sensors in the car. Also present in the CL-Class, is Mercedes' new COMMAND Controller. Some like new controller, some don't. However, be assured that it is easy and safe to use while driving.

The CL is available in 10 colors, 4 leather choices and 2 wood choices. All of these create stunning combinations.

The CL starts at approximately $105,000.00, and goes to about $200,000.00 depending on engine and option choices.

Luxury Coupe Shootout: Bentley Continental GT

The Bentley Continental GT is Bentley's lower-cost entrant into the luxury-coupe market. Coming in at approximately $169,000.00, the Continental is about 1/2 the price of the Brooklands. It also appeals to those 1/2 the age that the Brooklands appeals to. The Continental is powered by a W12. The W12 consists of two V6's mounted together. A novel feature also present on the Continental, is an automatic rear-spoiler that engages at approximately 100mph - a feature similar the Porsche 911's spoiler.

Luxury Coupe Shootout: Bentley Brooklands

Although it was Rolls-Royce's underling for many years, Bentley is now manufacturing cars that rival their former parent company's. In the Luxury Coupe market, Bentley has two entrants, the Brooklands and the Continental GT. The Brooklands, a much lower volume auto than the GT, is akin to the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe. The Continental GT, although lower priced, still has all the amenities and accoutrements one would associate with a Bentley. Without a doubt, they are both Luxury Coupes that will be at home in anyone's 10 car garage.

The Brooklands

The Brooklands is described by Bentley as "Exhilarating, effortless, accessible performance for those truly passionate about their driving. Beneath the muscular, coach-built body of the Bentley Brooklands lies the most powerful Crewe-built V8 ever produced, developing 530bhp (395kW) and a maximum torque of an astonishing 774lb ft (1050Nm), the highest ever torque output of any V8 automotive engine in the world.

Performance figures capture supercar performance from a luxury four-seater coupé. The Bentley Brooklands is capable of reaching 60mph in just 5.0 seconds

Not coming in enough colors one that no one could charge the Bentley Brooklands with. On the exterior side of things, forty-two (42) exterior colors are available. In the Brooklands' interior, twenty-seven (27) "hides" are available. Not to mention a forest full of wood choices.

For $340,990 this fine coupe can be yours - just think how lovely it will look in your 10 car garage!

Luxury Coupe Shootout : Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe

It is difficult to come-up with a marquee that represents the epitome of automobile manufacturing as well as Rolls-Royce does. Renowned for their fit & finish, superb build quality and overall panache, a Rolls-Royce in the preeminent choice for the upper-class of the world. The Rolls-Royce company was founded in 1906 by Sir Henry Rolls and Charles Royce. Sir Henry Rolls can be quoted as saying "The quality remains, long after the price is forgotten." - a credo that has led the marquee for over a century.

The Omega Speedmaster has been continuously produced since it was first in space. In fact, it is the only watch to have been on the moon. Fittingly it is often referred to as the “Moon Watch”. Currently, Omega makes nine (9) different Speedmaster model, with one to suit any taste. Although it is not COSC certified chronometer, the Speedmaster's movement is rock solid. The Speedmaster is produced in stainless steel, and gold. Leather straps are available. There are multiple commemorative editions all of which are striking, memorable, and frankly commemorative. Some models have a date, some models have the day and the date and others still are starkly simple with no date. There is a choice of bracelets to fit your every desire. The Speedmaster is available with numerous different faces. There is the clean and traditional black, a brown face that might just call your name, a moon phase face, and an Earth, Moon and Mars face that is simply gorgeous.

Creating fine time pieces since 1848, Omega is a pioneer in the watch making industry and manufacturer of world class watches today. In case you have forgotten or if you are new to the blog, we cover the finer things in life. The Luxury Life is our title and it is also our aim for you. Topics that will be covered in the near future. Basel World 2008, the latest and greatest from the worlds top automotive marquees, & we will have some tips and tricks entitled “ Luxury on a Budget” as some of us are effected by the recent economic slow-down more that others. But that still does not mean that you cannot live The Luxury Lifestyle.

Cars to Take to The Train Station: 600 SEL

Running the risk of being redundant, the second review in this series will be about the S600/ 600SEL. This model, which was introduced at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show, replaced the 560 SEL. One might ask, “Why another Mercedes sedan?” The answer is simple - with the right options the S600/ 600SEL can serve 2 functions in your fleet, train car and your back-up chauffeured car. This fine automobile could be ordered with optional bucket seats, with a rear center console, thus making perfect to ride around the back in when your Maybach or Bentley is in the shop. It is also a powerful car, a V12 sits under the hood. With many impressive features this car is one that is sure to please.

A brief run down of the S600/ 600 SEL’s features are as follows:

Braking system - The 600 SEL/S600 distributed more braking power to the rear wheels, increasing stopping effectiveness. In 1996, the 600 SEL/S600 received Brake Assist, which engaged during emergency maneuvers to boost braking power to maximum.
Electronic Stability Program (ESP) was introduced in 1996, and was one of the first stability control systems. ESP used on-board computers to improve vehicle handling response during difficult driving conditions.
Side airbags and seat occupancy sensors
Double-paned soundproofed glass was a new S-Class innovation first fitted on the 600 SEL/S600. This form of window glazing had soundproofing, reduced condensation, and insulation benefits.
Electrically-operated exterior mirrors could be folded at the flick of a switch to ease driving in narrow spaces.
'Parameter steering' was a system which made low-speed driving easier by reducing the effort required to maneuver in speed-sensitive situations such as parking.
Rear-parking markers, or guide rods. These rods extended at the rear corners of the trunk lid when in reverse, providing the driver with a guideline for rear maneuvers. In 1995, this system was replaced by the sonar-enabled Parktronic system which measured the distance of the bumpers to nearby obstacles.
Rain-sensing windshield wipers.
The 600 SEL/S600 featured a newly developed double wishbone front axle, and a multi-link independent rear suspension.

The 600 SEL/S600 is powered by a thirsty and racetrack worthy, 6.0 liter V12 engine. The option on the 600 SEL/S600 that you want to look for is the rear seating arrangement. Like a normal sedan, the 600 SEL/S600 was available with a rear-bench seat, but was also available with a 2 rear bucket seats, like the one in the Top Gear video. The two rear bucket seats (a rare option) insures that this car will become a collectable & also makes it the perfect back-up car for your chauffer. It’s limited numbers also mean that it will surely be collectable. This beast gets about 14 mpg on the highway, but as I said in my 560 SEL post, if you are enjoying the luxury lifestyle, you probably could car less about gas prices (As long as the dividends from your oil stocks cover your petrol purchases).

Things to look for in a 600 SEL

• Since this is such an exclusive car (original sticker was over $140,000) it is very likely to buy one in mint condition from the original owner.
• Low-Mileage, look for one with fewer than 100,000 miles.
• Service Records, Give preference to a dealer maintained car, rather than one maintained at the local filling station.
• As always, rust-free is the way to be!

Cars to Take to The Train Station: 560 SEL

The Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL was introduced in 1986 and manufactured until 1991. Originally introduced in 1981 as the 500 SEL, engine power was boosted by 0.6 liters and the interior was refreshed to commemorate Mercedes’ 100 years in the automobile business in 1986. Bruno Sacco designed this body style, designated “W126”. The car was more aerodynamic, sleeker, and more fuel efficient that it’s predecessor. Interestingly, this was the first Mercedes-Benz not to have chrome bumpers. Instead, deformable body-color polyurethane bumpers were used. The overall length of this luxurious tank was about 203 inches, a formidable car even by today’s standards.

Style-wise, the 560 SEL was the last Mercedes to have leather available in many colors (other than, beige, gray, & black like today), including blue, burgundy, and green. They are many striking color combinations for this vehicle. Silver with a blue interior, Silver with red, Blue on Blue, Green on Green, “Champagne” on tan are among those. My personal favorite is “040” (Mercedes internal color designation) black with a tan interior.

Many of the options available on the 560 SEL are right at home on today’s luxury sedans.

• Airbags

• Traction control, also known as Accelerated Skid Control (ASR) to prevent wheel spin (a Mercedes First)

• Seat belt pre-tensioners ETR enabled all seat belts (with exception of rear center lap belt) to tighten when the car sensed conditions that could lead to an accident; such as sudden, forceful braking. (a Mercedes First)

• Anti-lock braking system ABS brakes (a Mercedes/Bosch Invention)

• Crumple zones, which absorbed impact energies, reducing passenger injury. (a Mercedes Invention)

• Courtesy lights on the underside of the doors, to enable the occupant to see the ground when exiting the vehicle in the dark. Also on the 560 SEL are rear cabin reading lamps aimed at the rear seat occupants' laps so as to avoid distracting the driver at night.

• Eight-way powered, dual stage heated front seats, with two setting memory functions for both front occupants to retain positions of power adjustable steering column and seat position for driver; and seat position for front passenger.

• Two-way powered, dual stage heated rear bench seat, with four-way manually adjustable rear headrests

• Fully automatic climate control system that used an interior temperature sensor to more accurately control the climate of the cabin. This sensor was mounted near the sunroof so that when the roof was ajar, the sensor would detect cool wind chills and call upon the system to adjust heat flow accordingly.

• Exterior temperature sensor with display set in main instrument console below the speedometer to inform the driver of exterior conditions.

• Four-speed automatic transmission with a topographical sensor that monitored the vehicle's position (whether on an incline or decline) and gas pedal position. The result was an extraordinary capacity to "hold back" acceleration when coasting downhill and to maintain the S-Class' position without using the brake pedal after coming to a complete stop on a steep incline. The transmission also featured a "limp home mode" in case of electronic failure and was programmed to start in second gear so as to permit smooth, wheel spin free launches.

• The W126 carried forward the self-leveling hydro pneumatic suspension of the 6.9 W116 model. There were two versions of the self-leveling suspension for the sedan: a rear only hydraulic suspension using two nitrogen ballasts to automatically level the car, and a four-wheel hydraulic leveling system that could be set in three positions.

• Cruise control that used the transmission's topographical sensor to appropriately add and cut back the throttle fluidly as needed in order to maintain the desired set speed. The result was a cruise control that was free of the sudden throttle inputs and undesired downhill excess speed that plague many current cruise control systems.

The 560 SEL is powered by a strong V8. It is also a thirsty one, consuming a respectable 16 MPG. While in this era of Prius’ wrapped around trees (pun intended) this might not seem up to snuff, but for going to the train it is fine. Also, I needn’t say this but, leading the luxury lifestyle, you probably (& rightfully) could care less about fuel prices.

The SEL (Including non-560 models) is a widely available car with 818,063 models sold worldwide. This won’t make it difficult to find yourself a superb example.

Things to look for in a 560 SEL

• Rust-Free (There are so many good examples out there, there is no reason to settle for a rusty one).
• Low-Mileage, look for one with fewer than 100,000 miles.
• Ownership, 1 or 2 owner cars are preferable.
• Service Records, Give preference to a dealer maintained car, rather than one maintained at the local filling station.

The Ultimate Car to Take to the Train

Whilst at first glance this might not be an article series befitting of The Luxury Life, you will soon realize that it really is. In the off chance your chauffeur is off, you cannot leave your Bentley at the train station. The same goes for your 911 turbo, or even your less exotic but equally as luxurious new S-Class. It will most certainly get dented, scratched up, or some hoodlums will abscond with your hubcaps. So the task at hand is to find a car that suits your needs: is luxurious, semi-exotic, yet mundane enough to fly-under the radar. Another quality that will be looked for in the cars is whether or not they will be collectible. Since these cars will be a daily driver, they shouldn’t be collectible now, but in a few years will be. For an investment that will fall far, far below the $50,000 threshold, these cars will surely give you safe, reliable transport to and from the train, be an exciting time to drive, turn some heads, and maybe be a concurs winner a few years down the road. Each article will include, (In addition to pictures and a review) the availability of parts, where the car can be worked on, and some places to obtain your soon to be classic beauty. Think of this as an investment in your safety, the safety of your rolling stock, your fun quotient, and who knows, maybe even something to bring to Pebble Beach, a few years down the road.

You might wonder why the perfect train car wouldn’t be a new BMW 3-Series, or Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The reason is plain and simple these cars are for the young upwardly mobile professionals, who haven’t yet reached The Luxury Life. So if you know a “yuppie” it might be a good idea to print out this blog, save it and mail it to them in about 5 years, when they too can enjoy the luxury life.

The first post of The Luxury Life, will be discussing the company and products of Rolex SA.

Rolex, perhaps the world's foremost watch company and one of the most recognized brand names in the world, has been in business since 1905. A pioneer in the trade, Rolex has changed the face of the watch industry in more ways than one. Whether it was the incorporation of the "date" into a watch in 1945 or the Seadweller that is waterproof to 4,000 feet (It even has a helium release valve, so if you were to go below 4,000 feet you could save the watch, although 4,000 feet below the surface saving your watch might not be the first thing that comes to mind!) If you are a professional diver or Hedge Fund Manager or even the sportiest among the Palm Beach retirement community set, Rolex has a watch for you. From the bottom of the line Air-King to the top of the line Presidential, Rolex creates a watch with style, class, value, superb craftsmanship, and beauty. When a Rolex arrives, it's proud owner gets one of the best features of the watch, the box. First there is an outer box, then the inner box, and in that inner sanctum sits the watch itself. The box is truly a work of art, much of it shrouded in leather. Not to mention, the beautiful, full color literature that comes with it. Rolex boxes have been know to sell for over $100 on eBay.
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery than Rolex sits on top. It is said that Rolex is the most faked brand in the world. There is something to be said for this. After all the criminal element wouldn't be faking an awful watch. A Google search for Rolex, will return more fakes than real watches.
Often imitated, and never duplicated are the Rolex bands. Rolex watch bands are the most duplicated on the planet. Any watchmaker, even Omega had a Rolexesque band. Apparently they must be on to something.
A Rolex is a popular status-symbol in the world for those who have made it to the to The Luxury Life. Unlike some status symbols, a Rolex is one that loses little value and is fully functional.
In eleven (11) James Bond movies, Bond wears a Rolex. If it is good enough for Bond, it is good enough for me!
